Every once in a while, a church has to stop and ask a hard question: if we won't open our mouths for the ones who can't speak for themselves, who will? That's exactly where our time together landed when we sat down to talk through Idaho's Proposition 1. This wasn't a political rally dressed up in a church building. It was a family gathering around God's word to figure out how to love our neighbor and protect the weakest among us.

The whole thing was anchored in one verse, and I want you to sit with it before we go any further.

Open Your Mouth for the Speechless

"Open your mouth for the speechless, In the cause of all who are appointed to die." (Proverbs 31:8)

That's not a suggestion. That's a command straight from the mouth of God to His people. And notice who it's aimed at—those who are speechless, those appointed to die, those who have no lawyer, no vote, no microphone. A baby in the womb fits that description perfectly. He can't lobby. She can't testify. They can't march on the capitol steps. So God says, that's exactly why you open your mouth for them.

This is the same heartbeat you find in Psalm 82:3, where God tells His people to "defend the poor and fatherless." It's the same conviction behind Psalm 139, where David marvels that he was "fearfully and wonderfully made" while he was still being knit together in his mother's womb. From cover to cover, Scripture treats life in the womb the same way it treats life outside the womb—as a person made in the image of God, worth protecting.

Made in His Image Isn't a Slogan

Genesis 1:27 tells us God made mankind in His own image—male and female. That phrase, "image of God," isn't decoration. It's the reason murder is wrong, the reason slavery is wrong, the reason every human rights movement worth its salt eventually has to borrow biblical language to make its case. You can't build a lasting argument for human dignity on shifting sand. It has to stand on the rock that we are made by God, for God, in His likeness.

That's why this issue isn't a side issue for the church. It's not culture war noise. It's a discipleship issue. If God says every person—born or unborn—bears His image, then how we treat the unborn says something about how seriously we take God's word.

What Prop 1 Actually Does

Here's where we had to get practical, because good intentions don't win elections—clear thinking does. Idaho has had legal protection for the unborn going all the way back to our territorial days in 1864, nearly a decade before this land was even a state. When Roe v. Wade was struck down and the courts sent this issue back to the states, Idaho's Defense of Life Act went into effect, and it's been recognized nationally as some of the most carefully written pro-life legislation in the country.

Prop 1 would undo that. It's written cleverly—it doesn't come right out and say "we're repealing the partial-birth abortion ban" or "we're wiping out parental consent." But because it would become the most recently passed law, courts would treat it as the last word, and the protections we've built over decades would become what's called dead law. It also opens the door for far more people than licensed physicians to perform abortions, and it strips away accountability for those involved—while leaving the young woman herself without real protection.

Think of it like framing a house. You don't tear out the load-bearing wall and tell everyone the roof will hold itself up. Decades of careful legal work—informed consent, parental consent, the ban on partial-birth abortion—all of that rests on a foundation. Prop 1 knocks the foundation out from under it, and calls it "choice."

This Is a Spiritual Battle

It would be easy to treat this like any other political fight—raise money, run ads, win the vote, move on. But Scripture won't let us stop there.

"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)

That's why prayer and fasting have to come before postcards and yard signs. Not instead of them—before them. If we skip straight to strategy without getting on our knees, we're bringing a game plan to a fight that requires the whole armor of God. Put on the belt of truth. Take up the sword of the Spirit. Then, and only then, go knock on your neighbor's door.

And when you do talk to your neighbors, remember something important: the person on the other side of that door is not your enemy. Jesus died for them just as much as He died for the child in the womb. Speak the truth, but speak it in love. You're not trying to win an argument. You're trying to win a soul and save a life, sometimes in the same conversation.

Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Neighbor

Here's the plain truth: information without action doesn't save a single life. You can know every fact about Prop 1, but if you don't show up at the polls, register to vote, help an elderly neighbor get an absentee ballot, or have one honest conversation over coffee, none of that knowledge moves the needle. Idaho's history shows us that close elections turn on just a few thousand votes. A church family committed to praying, voting, and talking to their neighbors can absolutely change the outcome.

But don't miss the deeper point underneath all of this. The reason we fight for the unborn is the same reason Jesus came for us. John 10:10 draws the line clearly: the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. Every ballot measure that cheapens life is, at its root, borrowing from the enemy's playbook. And every effort to protect the vulnerable is borrowing from the heart of God, who is Himself the giver and lover of life.

So pray. Fast. Vote. Talk to your neighbor over the fence. Write the postcard. Share the honest post. And do it all remembering that the same God who formed that child in the womb formed you, redeemed you, and calls you to open your mouth for those who cannot open theirs.
